“Healing begins with understanding what the nervous system has learned to survive.”
The L.I.G.H.T. Institute, the Lumina Institute for the Generative Healing of Trauma, is an education, training, and consultation institute devoted to advancing healing-centered approaches to trauma, regulation, and human well-being.
Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, trauma theory, and culturally responsive practice, we translate complex science into practical frameworks that help individuals, practitioners, educators, and organizations understand not only what happens under chronic stress, but how meaningful repair becomes possible.
Our work moves beyond symptom management toward cultivating nervous system literacy, reflective awareness, sustainable regulation, and deeper forms of individual and collective healing.
What We Do
-
Engaging, research-informed learning experiences that make trauma science, nervous system literacy, and healing-centered practice accessible and immediately applicable.
-
Customized support for organizations, educators, practitioners, and teams seeking to strengthen trauma-responsive systems, sustainable practice, and culturally responsive care.
-
Accessible educational experiences designed to deepen understanding of regulation, trauma, burnout, intrapersonal repair, and the processes that support lasting healing.
We honor context, not just symptoms.
People do not experience stress, trauma, identity, relationships, or healing in a vacuum. Our work considers the cultural, relational, historical, and systemic environments that shape how people understand themselves and move through the world.
We approach culture with humility, not assumption.
Culturally responsive practice is not about memorizing characteristics of different groups. It requires curiosity, reflection, and an awareness of how power, identity, lived experience, and professional frameworks influence the healing relationship.
We make room for multiple ways of knowing.
Clinical knowledge matters, and so do embodied wisdom, community knowledge, spirituality, creativity, family traditions, and lived experience. Lumina creates space for these forms of knowing to exist in conversation rather than requiring one to erase the others.
Commitment to Culturally Responsive Care
Applied Nervous System Literacy for High-Stress Professions
Trauma-informed practice is not limited to clinical settings.
Professionals across healthcare, law, public safety, education, and other high-responsibility environments routinely work with people whose behavior, communication, decision-making, and capacity for engagement are shaped by stress and trauma.
The L.I.G.H.T. Institute provides consultation, professional development, and customized training that translates trauma science and nervous system literacy into practical frameworks organizations can use in real-world settings. Rather than asking professionals to become therapists, we help them better recognize stress responses, understand how dysregulation can influence behavior and interaction, and respond in ways that support safety, clarity, accountability, and effective communication.
Healthcare & Hospital Systems
Supporting trauma-responsive communication, patient engagement, staff regulation, and psychologically safer care environments.
Law Firms & Legal Professionals
Applying nervous system literacy to client communication, interviewing, conflict, testimony preparation, and work with trauma-exposed individuals.
Law Enforcement & Public Safety
Building greater understanding of stress physiology, escalation, trauma responses, communication, and regulation in high-intensity encounters.
Organizations & Leadership Teams
Helping teams recognize how chronic stress, burnout, relational dynamics, and organizational culture affect performance, decision-making, and well-being.
The goal is not to turn every profession into a mental health profession. It is to equip professionals with a more accurate understanding of the human nervous system so they can communicate, lead, assess, and respond more effectively.
