Healing Beyond Survival
The Lumina Institute for the Generative Healing of Trauma was created to help people, practitioners, and organizations understand trauma in a way that is both deeply human and clinically grounded. Our work brings together nervous system science, relational healing, psychological theory, and practical tools that support meaningful change.
At L.I.G.H.T., healing is not understood as simply managing symptoms or becoming better at enduring harmful environments. It is a process of restoring connection to the self, strengthening the capacity for regulation and repair, and creating relationships and systems that make sustained well-being possible. Through education, consultation, research-informed frameworks, and professional learning experiences, L.I.G.H.T. translates complex ideas into language and practices people can actually use.
Meet the Founder
Dr. Phoenix J. Cooper is a clinical psychologist, educator, scholar, and founder of the Lumina Institute for the Generative Healing of Trauma. Her work explores what becomes possible when trauma healing moves beyond symptom management and toward deeper nervous system regulation, relational repair, self-understanding, and restoration of agency.
With a background spanning trauma psychology, attachment, child and adolescent development, neurodivergence, and culturally responsive practice, Dr. Cooper is known for translating complex psychological ideas into language that feels accessible, practical, and deeply human. Her teaching invites people not only to understand psychological concepts intellectually, but to recognize how those concepts live within the body, relationships, workplaces, families, and everyday experience.
Her emerging theory of Intrapersonal Repair examines how individuals continue healing when acknowledgment, accountability, or repair from others is unavailable. This work sits at the center of her broader approach to trauma and nervous system healing, which emphasizes that regulation is not the final destination. Healing also requires the capacity to acknowledge one’s own experience, restore internal trust, differentiate past injury from present reality, and reconnect with a coherent sense of self.
Through L.I.G.H.T., Dr. Cooper develops educational experiences, lectures, consultation, and original frameworks designed to support individuals, practitioners, and organizations in creating environments where healing does not require people to become better at surviving harm.
At the heart of her work is a simple belief: people deserve more than strategies for enduring what hurts them. They deserve the language, support, and conditions necessary to heal.
This Little Light of Mine
A Children’s Story for Emotional Understanding, Resilience & Reconnection
At L.I.G.H.T., we believe children deserve language for their inner worlds long before those feelings become too heavy to carry alone.
This Little Light of Mine, written and illustrated by Dr. Phoenix J. Cooper, brings the principles of healing-centered practice into a gentle, imaginative story created specifically for children.
The story follows Noel, a child whose inner light begins to fade after a stressful experience. When the star within Noel slips away, a luminous guardian bird named Bennu appears and leads Noel through a magical forest where emotions take shape as curious little creatures.
Along the way, Noel encounters sadness, worry, guilt, and fear not as feelings to defeat, but as experiences that can be approached with curiosity, compassion, and courage.
Healing Through Story
Children do not always have the language to explain what is happening inside of them.
Story can create another doorway.
Through metaphor, imagination, and emotionally accessible characters, This Little Light of Mine gives young readers space to recognize difficult feelings without requiring them to disclose, retell, or relive their own experiences.
The story gently introduces ideas central to Lumina’s approach:
emotions can be noticed without being feared
difficult experiences do not erase the self
compassion can change our relationship with painful feelings
regulation and connection can help us find our way back to safety
our inner light may become difficult to feel, but it is never truly gone
A Resource for Children, Families & Helping Professionals
This Little Light of Mine can be used as a comforting bedtime story, a conversation starter between caregivers and children, or a supportive resource within educational and helping environments.
Its imaginative world offers children a developmentally accessible way to explore emotional literacy, self-compassion, resilience, and reconnection while preserving the wonder of simply being a child.
The Story Is Only the Beginning
The book pairs beautifully with its companion workbook, which extends the story through gentle reflection, grounding activities, creative exercises, and opportunities for children to explore their own emotional world at their own pace.
Together, the story and workbook reflect one of the central commitments of L.I.G.H.T.:
Healing does not begin by asking children to explain everything that happened. Sometimes it begins by giving them a safe way to understand what they feel, remember who they are, and discover that their light is still there.
